A little history
Apnea, or the act of voluntarily stopping your breathing, has been practiced for thousands of years. The first traces of this discipline date back to the Ama, Japanese fisherwomen who have been freediving for over 2,000 years to collect shellfish and pearls.
In ancient times, Greek sponge fishermen, like those on the island of Kalymnos, used apnea to descend to depths of several dozen meters, sometimes with the help of a weighted stone, the skandalopetra.
Today, freediving is no longer limited to fishing or sporting challenges: it has become a genuine tool for mental well-being and inner discovery, attracting more and more practitioners in search of a deep connection with the sea.
An age-old discipline
A deep connection between body and mind.
The benefits of apnea
Regular apnea practice strengthens respiratory muscles, improves ribcage flexibility and increases lung capacity. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that high-level freedivers develop increased tolerance to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and improved ventilatory efficiency.
Apnea is based on relaxation and breath control, techniques that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the state of deep relaxation. A 2013 study by PLOS showed that regular apnea practice reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and improves emotional management.
Visualization and breath control techniques in apnea have effects comparable to meditation. A study conducted by the same institute showed an increase in alpha-wave activity in the brains of freedivers, associated with greater emotional control and mental clarity.
Periods of low oxygenation during apnea stimulate the production of red blood cells, which can improve resistance to exertion and boost the immune system. Some studies also suggest a link with the activation of cellular regeneration processes similar to those observed during intermittent fasting.
Apnea improves breathing capacity, strengthens the cardiovascular system, reduces stress and promotes a deep connection between body and mind.
Why sail?
The Cyclades archipelago, in the heart of the Aegean Sea, offers exceptional conditions for freediving, for beginners as well as for advanced divers.
✅ Crystal-clear waters and exceptional visibility
The Cyclades are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, with visibility between 20 and 30 meters.
✅ Pleasant temperatures all season long
Between May and October, water temperatures vary between 24°C and 28°C, offering optimum comfort for extended freediving sessions.
✅ Few currents and protected areas
Unlike other regions more exposed to sea currents, some Cycladic islands, such as Milos, Paros or Amorgos, benefit from sheltered bays and protected areas, ideal for snorkeling in complete safety.
✅ Spectacular seabed diversity
Between underwater caves, drop-offs, arches and reefs, the Cyclades offer a diversity of spots for freediving exploration and training. Some islands, such as Amorgos, are famous for their links with the history of freediving, notably thanks to the film The Big Blue.
✅ A calm, unspoilt environment
Far from the hustle and bustle of major tourist areas, the Cyclades offer wild, tranquil anchorages, perfect for focusing on practice, relaxation and connection with the water.
